Mentoring plays a crucial role in guiding individuals toward personal and professional growth. The University of Iowa is committed to making mentoring an area of institutional distinction, by elevating the diverse mentoring networks that connect students with faculty, staff, postdocs, peer leaders, and alumni. To support a culture of mentoring at the University of Iowa, we are hosting a one-day conference on Oct. 9, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. — 2 p.m.

Topics and purpose for the conference
- Connecting faculty, staff, postdocs, and students currently engaged in mentoring programs across campus.
- Inviting campus stakeholders to learn about high-impact mentoring practices.
- Creating spaces to hear directly from different student populations about mentoring needs.
- Providing space for campus stakeholders to brainstorm solutions to existing issues in mentoring.
- Sparking new partnerships, resource sharing, and collaboration in support of student, faculty, postdocs, and staff success.
Conference participants will be able to choose from over ten unique sessions highlighting mentoring efforts at Iowa and can join sessions throughout the conference as they are able to. The conference will also feature a common read.
We know that mentoring relationships established at Iowa have a profound impact on both the mentor and the mentee. Please join us on Oct. 9 for the Mentoring@Iowa Conference to help build an intentional mentoring culture at the University of Iowa.

Leading with Story | In study after study, communication consistently ranks as a top leadership skill. Communicate effectively and your team can move mountains. But how can you stand out as a leader in our crowded, distracted world? Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools for connecting with and inspiring others. By learning to tell your story, you can take ownership of your unique voice and put it to use in your work as a leader. Alumni Mentoring Panel | This panel will have alumni talking about mentoring and engaging current students as well as mentoring after graduation, including a discussion of their own experiences with being a mentor or mentee. What Makes Mentoring Work | During this session, Dr. Beth Livingston will talk about general approaches to mentoring and under what circumstances it is the most effective.
